Quibblo Quiz and Garden Creek Results!!!

Saturday, December 13, 2008

In previous posts i had told you i would post the results. this brings us both good and bad news. The Quibblo Quiz has good results 17 people responded to the poll this shows us that people are aware that the environment should be a main concern today. The winner was global warming and the close second was reusable materials. The bad news is the results on Garden Creek. The Water quality was great at the first to test sites which were the falls and the Audubon Center. However, we found that the City of Casper has a major effect on Garden Creek. The results from Adams park and Nancy English Park showed that the creek had very poor water quality. You may think it's just one creek who cares if its polluted however there are many creeks just like Garden Creek and those creek run into the river which diminishes its water and the river leads into the ocean which ultimately destroys the Oceans Water Quality! So how can I help some may wonder. You can Help keep local creeks clean by
  1. making sure only rain goes down the storm drain
  2. do not litter!
  3. pick up pet waste
  4. inform others
If you have any comments or questions please comment
Do you guys like the new Design i made the background with GIMP?

November's Eco-Tip

Friday, November 28, 2008

Check your Light Bulbs! Switching from incandesent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs may seem expensive at first however they last longer and use less energy than the normal incadesent bulbs. If switching is still not in your budget there are other ways you can save energy,
  1. Turn off the lights when you leave a room
  2. Open the blinds and use natural light
  3. Try using fixtures that only use one or two bulbs at a time

BRING YOUR OWN BAGS
At many stores they give you two opptions paper or plastic bags. However, there has been a new movement toward new reusable canvas bags. Mant store such as target (pictured at the left) and JC Pennys are selling them right in there stores. There are also ones you can buy online that have band names and slogans on them. A tip keep thae bags in your car so you can have them when ever you need them. So what if your not ready to spring out and buy a new canvas bag. Both walmart and Albertson have bag recycling centers near the front of there stores so you can keep recycling those plastic bags and not pay a dime.

Garden Creek Project

Monday, September 22, 2008

I'm enrolled in a class called Enviromental Field Science. It is taught by Mrs. Jacobs and is really fun. Because Mrs. Jacobs is too overworked (she'd most likley rather want to watch the tube)she decided to fill the schedual feild trips for the whole semester. It is kinda of nice however, recording the data formally is boring. For The first feild trip series we are going to collect bug samples from each part of the stream. We identify them and then put them back into the creek as to not disrupt the enviroment. To all of you who are unaware of where garden creek there is a simple map to the left which you can click on to view the area. If you understand location better by wrriten word then here is my very vauge discription of the creek. It starts on Casper Mountain and  flows into Rotary Park (also known as the Falls.) It then runs down the mountain to the Audobon Center where it converges with another small creek. It then runs through Sunrise and dumps into the N.Platte River. Anyways we've been to two sites so far the Audobon Park and the falls. There are 12 different macroinvertabretes (insects) that we look for to caculate the pollution Stonefly being the most sesitive and Worms being the most tolerent to pollution. Again if you could think of more concerns or subjects that you think are important to the enviroment and such please share them they will take a key role in my next post.
PS: sorry this is'nt on sunday like i've promised i came down with a cold and did not feel so good

Water Bottle Update

Thursday, September 18, 2008

Recently i had a post on water bottles (the eco tip of the month) and what was is right for you. This video shows some other effects that your water bottle may have.

Your point of view?????

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Since I will be out of town sunday I am going to leave a question for you fellow bloggers. What do you think the biggest Enviromental concern of our Day and why? The one we all think is the most important will be conciderend on the following Sunday. However Expect an artical in between those to discussing the new iPods and if they really are Eco- Friendly. I have also added the feature to subscribe by email look for it on the right colum.

Know your Eco-system

Thursday, September 4, 2008

You may here the terms Eco-Friendly or Enviromental Issues every once in a while in your life. You may have seen a celeberety speak about the Enviromental Issues and how they effect us. Or you might have even bought something that has the label Eco-Friendly on it. But have you ever stop to take the time to relise what the enviroment actually is and what are some issues facing it? That's right Global warming is not the only issue there are several more. Lets start with the basics. Enviroment or the eco-system is the world that surrounds us today. It is made up of 117 known elements. Yes, there maybe more elements to this vast planet we live in that scientist have not discovered yet. It also contains a wide array of organisms, from the single cell organisms that live in the water, to human beings who contain 50 -75 trillion cells. You may have notice that we are included in the Eco-system. We are part of the earth and effect the way it works so we are a part of the enviroment. A lot of people don't seem to get this they think that the earth is something to be used to what best suits us. The ironic thing about this situation is that humans may have survived the harsh conditions of this earth without one factor, the human mind. We are not blessed with extraordinary strength, speed, or power but we still survived the many perolious things that expand over this globe. However, that mind lead to our down fall we began pulluting the earth with toxins and taking it to it's limits. This is causing natural disasters around the world, right now at this moment ther are three tropical storms/ hurricanes heading twards the east coast of the United States. This leads me to the biggest enviromental issue Global warming. Global warming refers to CO2 gasses causing a blanket over the earth traping solar rays in Eco-system.CO2 comes from ancient sunlight. That term may not make sense to you but it will after i explain where it comes from. Since humans have been on the earth there energy came from sunlight. Plants trap sunlight with a part of the cells in them called chlorophyll, we eat the plant or something that has ate the plant and took energy in from that. But, when those plants weren't ate they would decompose and fossiles in to coal or concentrate into oil leaving pockets of anciet sunlight The variable of even a few degrees warmer a year can be devistating on a world wide scale. Just a few degrees can cause the ice caps to melt adding fresh water to are oceans. In turn that would slow down the current that work by fluctulating the delicate balance of fresh an salt water. In turn that would mess eith the weather current causing a climate disaster. This may be the reason why were seeing a record breaking amount tornadoes ever! This brings me to another eco issue, pollution. Oil Spills, Liter, and Toxins all add to the polluting of  Water, Land, and Air. Oil Spills pretty much can wipe out an enviroment for a few decades with cleaning and everything. Liter can add a variable to our enviroment that could seriously hurt it. So thats about it for my big eco lesson.

Eco- Tip of the Month!!!

Monday, September 1, 2008

Alright this is the first of many series I hope to come to this blog. The post and what is used for is described in the 'how this blog will work' post in the month of August, look in the archive. So the Eco-Tip for this month is BYOB bring your own bottle. Water bottle for this matter. Many people hey i'll buy this diposable water bottle and maybe use it for the week. WRONG!!!! the diposable water bottles with the # 1 or 2 recycle seem toxins into your body after refilling it once. So the short and simple answer go with a tin or a nalgene type bottle. If you decide to use the nalgene bottle make sure it's BPA free. BPA is a chemical that was in a lot of water bottles before three or four months ago. It was proven to cause hormonal issues in peoples offsprings. So I wouldn't use old nalgene watere bottles or any with the recycle numbers 3,5, or 6 unless it was proven to be BPA free.

According to FilterForGood.com, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles in 2006 and only recycled 38. If just one person stopped buying disposable water bottles, they would be saving 129 bottles from ending up in landfills a year. Click on the link and you can take a pledge to not use disposable water bottles and it shows you how many water bottles; you, your state, your city, and your neighborhood have save.  IT'S REALLY COOL CHECK IT OUT!!! How the blog will run?

If that sunday is the first Sunday of the month Then i will enlighten your lifes with the eco tip of the month and how it has effected me and others. This way we can make our eco-foot print just the slightest bit showler. If you have an eco tip or any thing you would like me to talk about just shoot me an email @ guitar.rocker101@gmail.com or leave a comment either way works. i will leave with this eco-quote

Jack Johnsons Hope

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Jack Johnson is a mega environmental warrior who teams up with orgs like the Surfrider Foundation, puts on the greenest shows ever, and generally is the number one green musician alive. But it gets even better than that.

Jack’s got demands. Contractual ones, as a matter of fact. USA Today reports that Jack’s contracts stipulate that event organizers must compost and recycle at least 50% of the waste at his shows and buy carbon dioxide offsets to cover his shows’ energy use. Talk about star power!
He also likes to keep the fans involved. To do so, he started allatonce.org to get people going green–and to reward them with free downloads. Wouldn’t it be amazing if every musician went that far?

Reduce Reuse Recycle

Monday, August 25, 2008

Ok i decided to make a little change to my blog instead of focusing on music it will now be focusing on the enviroment. There is the eco tip of the day gadget that will help us to save the enviroment one step at a time. That leads us to the title Green Springs i thought it was a clever name for expressing the leaps we are making to become eco friendly. Now how can we really become more enviromentally aware? We first need to look at the problem. The waste we generate today whether it CO2 emmisions or the land fill we keep piling reusable materials onto are polluting the earth. We can all benifit from the three r's Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We can Reduce our amount of emmisions by walking or taking public transportation instead of driving everywhere. We can Reuse by refilling water bottles, using the hammy down method, and shop at second hand stores. We can recycle cans, paper, and plastic. Sadly our small town of casper only provides Platic Recycling threw small bens located throughout the city. They don't exept the plastic at the recycling center. So that about wraps up this post you can comment on all enviromental issues or ideas you have under this post.

Pandora Radio

Sunday, April 13, 2008

I found an awesome new radio site called Pandora it allows you to search for artist and songs you like and then it gives you songs that are similar based on 100's of parts of a song. You can thumbs up and down songs and it will adapt your list. Also you can tell them your sick of a song and it won't play it for a month. When you thumbs down a song it will skip the song but because of lisencing issues you can only have 5 skips per hour. After the 5 skips you can stiil rate the song down it just won't skip the song. You can create up to 100 stations the 2 i have created so far are on the side bar. If you want to add me to ur friends on Pandora my email is guitar.rocker101@gmail.com . I hope you enjoy the site!!!
